State program to combat the impact of chemical toxins and carcinogens on human health during the war in Ukraine

Professor Oleksiy Kovalev, together with People's Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Valery Zub, in the thematic issue "Oncology, Hematology, Chemotherapy" of the medical newspaper "Health of Ukraine" No. 6 (92) 2024, published an article in which they discussed the impact of toxins and carcinogens on the health of the population during the war in Ukraine.

They drew attention to the fact that the destruction of ecosystems in eastern Ukraine is already global in nature and can affect the ecological systems of other countries, but this problem has not yet attracted the attention of the scientific community. Today, there is no joint international project with Ukraine to conduct biomonitoring and environmental rehabilitation of the eastern regions of the country, whose ecosystems are most destroyed by the war.

The Ukrainian state program to combat groundwater contamination by military chemical toxins should be implemented in accordance with the principles of the declaration of the Global Framework Program “For a Planet Free from Chemicals and Wastes” and include an integrated approach based on monitoring, modern cleaning technologies, legislative initiatives and international support.
