Participation of the World Against Cancer Foundation in addressing mental health issues in cancer patients
The Ukrainian foundation "World Against Cancer" was selected by EU4H Action Grants to participate in the international ALTHEA project, organized by the IEO European Institute of Oncology "Addressing mental health issues in cancer patients and their families: digital solutions to improve care"
As of 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world, affecting patients of all ages and vulnerable individuals. Psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, emotional stress, fear of relapse and cognitive impairment are common among cancer patients and their caregivers, affecting treatment adherence.
The project aims to develop and implement the Althea web platform, which will facilitate the identification of mental health problems among cancer patients and their families, while helping doctors access modern educational materials and provide individual psychological support.
Althea solutions will provide systematic screening for psychological and cognitive disorders and will facilitate their access to information materials and targeted psychological support.
The Althea platform will initiate systematic screening, promptly identifying individuals with a high risk of developing mental health problems.
The creation and implementation of scalable, accessible and personalized solutions for screening and providing psychological support to cancer patients and their families is a critical component in the field of public health, which has significant socio-economic consequences.
Together with oncologists and volunteers of the World Against Cancer Foundation, professional psychologists from the Department of Psychology of Zaporizhzhya National University take part in the project.
